National 200 and 400 metres record holder, Aliann Pompey, turned in a blistering 51.07 seconds in the 400m event in Bulgaria to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in the ‘A’ category last weekend.
Pompey, who will be competing at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) championships this weekend, obliterated Russia’s Elena Voynova (52.85) and Lithuania’s Agne Orlauskaite (53.61) in the process.
The Olympic ‘A’ standard for women’s 400m is 51.50 seconds.
Pompey competed at the 2000 Sydney Games and the 2004 Athens Games for Guyana and failed in her bid for a final placing at both meets.
So far, Marian Burnett and Pompey have achieved qualifying ‘A’ standards for Guyana ahead of the Beijing Games.
Olympic Rule
Each country may send a maximum of three athletes per event provided they have achieved the ‘A’ standard and a maximum of one athlete per event provided they have achieved the ‘B’ standard within the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) qualifying period.
In the event that a country does not produce any athletes to that level they may still select one male and one female athlete for a maximum of one event each.
