Today is Father’s Day and this newspaper decided to take a peek into the lives of two prominent fathers in the local political sphere, namely People’s Progressive Party General Secretary Donald Ramotar and leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Robert Corbin.
According to Ramotar, who is a father of two sons, Alexei and Alvaro, and a daughter, Lisaveta, becoming a father was a life changing experience.
“The greatest achievement of a man is becoming a father…I have been very fortunate to have very loving children.”
When asked about fond memories of fatherhood, Ramotar said that he was very fortunate to have been an integral part of his children’s lives. He explained that when the children were younger their mother was studying to become a nurse, leaving much of the responsibility of caring for them to him. “Therefore I was very much a part of my children’s lives from a very young age all through to university.”
Ramotar is firm in his belief that a father must be just as responsible as mothers, given that both parties are responsible for bringing children into this world.
Speaking to the phenomenon of single mothers, he noted that “I think a man must bear the responsibility…in fact it is more his responsibility.”
Regarding what Father’s Day means to him, Ramotar said that it is a day of reflection and reminiscing on the joys of being a father. “Everyday for me is Father’s Day.”
He noted that fatherhood is a major responsibility and advised fathers to utilize the opportunity and ensure that they play a vital role in the lives of their children.
Robert Corbin is currently in New York and his children are also at this time inaccessible so this newspaper spoke with Mr. Corbin’s wife, Carol Corbin to get her views on the opposition leader’s role as a father.
Carol, with a bright smile on her face, told this newspaper that Corbin was the best man that could have fathered her children and despite his hectic life, he ensures that he spends time with his children, especially for their customary Easter vacation.
According to Mrs. Corbin, “He is always involved with his children’s life…in guiding as much as possible and spending quality time with his children.”
When asked for a fond memory of Mr. Corbin and his children, his wife, after thinking for a few moments, said he would usually provide the family’s Sunday meal by request.
According to her, each Sunday Mr. Corbin, who loves cooking, would gather his children together and ask for requests after which he would prepare the meal. “He is that kind of father,” she noted.
According to Mrs. Corbin, he is not the autocratic father which some may presume and never once had cause to spank (beat) his children since “talking always worked”.
Robert Corbin is the father of two boys and two girls: Shaka, Royston, Fidela and Ann.
