DEAR EDITOR,
I am living in South Africa now and coincidentally I’m watching a satellite programme on Pit Bull attacks in the USA.
I go online almost daily to read about what is happening in Guyana and I am sad to read about the recent attacks on innocent victims including school children, along with the GSPCA inspectors.
I know from experience, the job of an inspector is never an easy one. Having rescued many, many sick and vicious animals off the streets of Georgetown, I was and like many other volunteers, including Syeada Manbodh, bitten several times; never once did I think it was the dog’s fault. Many animals are subjected to horrible living conditions and insane methods to “train” them.
The owners of vicious and other animals should be educated about the importance of spaying and neutering and certainly be responsible owners of these dogs. Sterilizing any animal is so very important in today’s world and it will also ‘calm’ the animal.
Pit Bulls are no exception and the owners of these dogs are always to blame. Those very same dogs on Forshaw Street in Queenstown were regularly loose when I last visited Georgetown in October 2006 and I certainly believe that any dog will attack if in a ‘’pack’’ situation.
I do hope the GSPCA inspectors who were attacked while protecting the school children and the public were given a letter of recognition for saving lives that day.
However, my last comment would be to say that Pit Bulls should be registered with a particular body, such as The Ministry of Agriculture.
